Moonstone is a variety of feldspar, valued for its distinctive optical phenomenon known as adularescence. This effect appears as a soft, billowy light that seems to float beneath the surface of the stone, shifting as it moves under changing angles of light.

The most valuable specimens exhibit strong, even blue adularescence combined with good transparency, although stones displaying a multicolored (rainbow) sheen are also highly appreciated for their unique visual effect.
